The Girl King Boycott was a marketing campaign launched in 2022 to protest the discharge of the movie “The Girl King.” The boycott was organized by a bunch of activists who argued that the movie glorified the Kingdom of Dahomey, a strong West African state that engaged within the slave commerce.
The activists argued that the movie’s portrayal of the Dahomey Amazons, an all-female army unit, was traditionally inaccurate and sanitized the dominion’s function within the slave commerce. Additionally they criticized the movie for its casting of Viola Davis, a dark-skinned actress, within the lead function, arguing that it perpetuated the concept that solely light-skinned black ladies are worthy of being celebrated.
